SEVOFLURANE ANESTHESIA

When choosing an anesthetic for a pet for a variety of procedures, there are numerous choices regarding which anesthetic to use. As human medicine advances, so does veterinary medicine and anesthesia. At All Pets Medical Centre, we have been offering the option of anesthesia with the newest latest anesthetic since December 2002. This anesthetic gas is called sevoflurane. It is sometimes referred to as the "Next Generation in Anesthesia". It is the same anesthetic that is currently commonly utilized in human medicine.

Sevoflurane is of course used with oxygen for the induction and/or maintenance of a pet in a state that allows for all sorts of surgeries, both minor and major. The advantages of using sevoflurane anesthesia include ease of use, safer anesthetic, more controllable, faster induction and wake-up following a procedure, and a pleasant, non-pungent odor. There are no known contraindications for using sevoflurane and we have been using this anesthesia daily in a large variety of animal species, including but not limited to, dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, chinchillas, reptiles, rats, ferrets, sugar gliders, and hamsters. The unique properties of sevoflurane render it a lower potency drug than the other more commonly utilized inhalation anesthetic, isoflurane. This in turn translates to such factors as more rapid depth (of anesthesia) control, no adverse cardiac (heart) or renal (kidney) affects as the anesthetic is minimally metabolized as 97% is exhaled, and for more rapid and smoother recoveries. This anesthetic also lends itself to more rapid inductions with less patient struggling. Actually the numbers are such that the speed of induction is considered to be 30-50% faster than that with isoflurane and the speed of recovery is 40-50% faster than with the use of isoflurane.

Although we routinely offer sevoflurane as an option in patients that will be anesthetized for routine procedures, it would be considered THE anesthetic of choice for all high-risk patients. This would include such situations as the geriatric pet, the very young pet, the severely ill pet that requires anesthesia, for pet’s requiring a cesarean section (C section) for the delivery of babies, and for the critically injured pet. Additional uses for sevoflurane include rapid and safer anesthesia induction for fractious cats (once the anesthetic mask is on a cat’s face, the pet will reach a plane of anesthetic usually within 30 seconds!). Using sevoflurane is helpful for both clients and pets alike, as the anesthetic works so rapidly, some pets can have a procedure done while the owner waits for the pet to recover, as the recovery once again is quite fast.

In summary, sevoflurane is the next generation of anesthesia and is now available for your pet. There is an additional cost for this anesthetic but the added benefits are well worth this extra cost. Ask for it when you visit the clinic.
